St Andrews' original Byre Theatre was situated in a semi-derelict dairy farm cow byre and founded in 1933 by Alexander B. Paterson, a local freelance journalist and prolific playwright. In 1969 the much-loved original Byre Theatre was demolished to make way for a housing development and a new theatre was opened in 1970. The facilities were modest but rather grand compared to its predecessor! Today's extensively refurbished Byre Theatre was built by award-winning architects Nicoll Russell Studios of Broughty Ferry.
